THE NATURAL WAY TO CHANGE BEHAVIOURS -ONE SMALL STEP AT A TIME

Einstein said that insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.
The paradox is that, very often, the more we want change and the harder we push to force change, the less it happens. So why is this?

As human beings our default setting is stability, not change.  The body constantly works to maintain a state of ‘Homeostasis’ which is the tendency of the body to seek and maintain a condition of balance or equilibrium within its internal environment, even when faced with external changes.  A simple example of this is the body's ability to maintain its own internal temperature regardless of the temperature outside.

The unconscious mind is no different and even though our conscious mind may desire change, the unconscious will resist, seeking homeostasis.

But, because we live in a rapidly changing technical world, we expect the opposite - to be able to change just as rapidly and just as dramatically – which is the wrong approach.

Look at the cycle of change from new born baby to adult, far from being rapid and dramatic, it is almost unnoticeably slow.

But we need to get going - just one small step at a time!

I already hear the cries of ‘that will take too long’, but surely a longer, successful journey is better than a short failed one?  And as the improvement is incremental, every day is better than the last. Success is coming in small daily bites.

That small, daily activity becomes a habit; the habit becomes a behaviour; change has happened and been established.

This principle can be applied to any aspect or area of your life or business and those small incremental changes lead to enormous outcomes.

By understanding, and working with, the brain we can achieve so much more.

We can help you to apply this principle to change in any area of your life or business.  To find out more contact:  Terri Codd MCF -  Corporate Training & Life Coach: 076 751 3556: coddterri@gmail.com: terricodd.blogspot.com

THE LAW OF INCREMENTAL GAINS - ACCUMULATING SUCCESS

Success is an accumulation event, it’s not about intensity it’s about consistency.
Let’s take an example: you want to get in shape so you start at the gym. After your first workout you take a look in the mirror, or weigh yourself. Do you see a difference? I doubt it. But, if you keep going to the gym regularly, you will get  in shape and, over time you not only will see, and experience, a difference, but you will continue to improve. Consistency is twenty minutes a day, on a daily basis. Intensity is a nine hour session at the gym once a month. Consistency definitely wins, even if you do cheat now and then.
This law of incremental gains applies, no matter what we want to achieve. When we consistently apply ourselves to doing what needs to be done, we will continue to improve, and our best will surely get better. This is what excellence really is, that consistent journey of betterment.
No matter what you desire to succeed at, be it business, sales, leadership, being a better husband or wife, health, fitness, sporting achievements, the list goes on and on, this rule of consistency and incremental gains applies.
So, no matter how little , start today and, even though you may not see it straight away, keep at it and your success is guaranteed.

PERSEVERANCE – THE BIGGEST FACTOR IN SUCCESS

The more I practice, the ‘luckier’ I get. Have you ever heard an expert tell you that? And they mean it. The difference between champions and also rans is most often that. The champion keeps on practicing the same move over and over and over again until he or she not only gets it right but goes way beyond.

But in this high speed, ever changing world the biggest challenge is not the move, it is the boredom associated with doing the same move over and over. In a world always looking for the next revolution or the quick fix, doing something for as long as it takes to become expert at it has almost become anathema, looked down on even.

At the end of the day, a runner needs to run, an investor needs to invest, a chef needs to cook, a salesman needs to sell and they all need to do all the little things necessary day in and day out until they become experts - many of them considered downright boring.

A world class athletic coach, when asked for his secret, replied: “it doesn’t matter what level my athletes are, most of the time they are doing the basics, over and over and over again. The trick is not doing the basics, it’s overcoming the feeling of monotony or boredom that often goes along with it”.

Bruce Lee once said:  “I fear not the man who has practiced 10,000 kicks once, but I fear the man who has practiced one kick 10,000 times”.

Ask yourself,” what are the basic things that you need to do to succeed in your world?” Are you doing them persistently come rain or shine until you succeed?

Because the more you practice, the ‘luckier’ you’ll get.

Talk to us about our ‘Tiny Habits’ workshops and change your life continuously, one step at a time.
